South Korean Kim Jong-yang elected as Interpol president

  • Kim Jong Yang of South Korea has been elected Interpol President for a two-year term.

  • The decision was taken at the 87th General Assembly of the Agency in Dubai. 

  • The world is now facing unprecedented changes which present huge challenges to public security and safety.

  • He said, to overcome the challenges, there is a need for a clear vision. 

  • Being held for the first time in the UAE, the Interpol General Assembly brought together officials of public security departments and global experts to discuss vital safety and security issues. 

  • Role of technology and artificial intelligence in the fight against terrorism and transnational organized crime was also discussed so as to have enhanced cooperation amongst the member states to make the world a safer place to live.

Abhijit Bose named WhatsApp India Head

  • WhatsApp on November 21 named Abhijit Bose as its India Head, meeting one of the key demands made by the government. 

  • Mr. Bose, who will join the messaging platform early 2019, will build WhatsApp’s first full country team outside of California and will be based in Gurugram. 

  • The appointment comes at a time when the Facebook-owned company has been under tremendous pressure to put in place a mechanism to curb fake messages on its platform that incite mob fury. 

  • The government has been pressing WhatsApp to develop tools to combat fake or false messages, and also identify message originators.

Narendra Singh Tomar given charge of Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs

  • Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will now hold the charge of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs following the demise of Union Minister Ananth Kumar. 
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has assigned the charge to Mr. Tomar. 
  • Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, D V Sadanand Gowda has been given the charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers in addition to his existing portfolio.

Union Minister Ananth Kumar passes away at 59 in Bengaluru

  • Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar died at a private hospital in Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday (12 November, 2018) after battling lung cancer for several months, hospital authorities said. 
  • He had come back to Bengaluru only recently after undergoing treatment in the US and Britain.
  • He was later under treatment at the Sankara Hospital in Bengaluru.

Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, X-Men and Marvel comic legend, passes away at 95

  • Marvel legend Stan Lee, who revolutionized pop culture as the co-creator of iconic superheroes like Spider-Man and The Hulk who now dominate the world's movie screens, has died on 12 November, 2018 at the age of 95. 
  • He had suffered a number of illnesses in recent years.
  • "My father loved all of his fans," his daughter told.
  • "He was the greatest, most decent man." 
  • The New Yorker, known for his distinctive tinted glasses and impish grin, frequently appeared at fan events where he was revered. 
  • Lee ended up in the comics business by accident, thanks to an uncle who got him a job when he was a teenager filling artists' inkwells and fetching coffee.
  • "I felt someday I'd write the 'Great American Novel' and I didn't want to use my real name on these silly little comics," he once said, explaining why he had forsaken his given name, Stanley Lieber.
  • Lee rose through the ranks to become a comics writer, making millions of superhero fans dream of his fantastic universes and humans with extraordinary powers, and eventually led the Marvel empire for decades as its publisher.
  • From Spidey to Black Panther to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, Lee collaborated with other authors and illustrators to put his lively imagination on the page.
  • Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange would follow -- and today, all three heroes have multi-film franchises that rake in hundreds of millions of dollars.
  • Lee has appeared in cameo roles in nearly every Marvel movie -- including as a bus driver in "Avengers: Infinity War," a film that united many of the indelible characters he brought to life.

Ad Guru Padmashri Alyque Padamsee passes away at 90

  • Alyque Padamsee, widely called the Brand Father of Indian advertising, died in Mumbai on 17 November, 2018. He was 90.
  • Padamsee was reportedly in bad health and had been ailing for quite some time. 
  • During his active years in ad industry, he remained the brain behind several iconic and memorable Indian ad campaigns. Mr Padamsee was also best known for his role as Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1982 historcial drama "Gandhi".
  • For his contributions to the creative field, he was honored with Padmashri in 2000 and was named Advertising Man of the Century by The Advertising Club in Mumbai.
