Registration for annual Amarnath Yatra begins

  • The registration for annual Registration for annual Amarnath Yatra begins began through the notified bank branches.

  • The two-month long pilgrimage will start on the 28th of June this year via both Baltal and Pahalgam routes.

  • Any person below the age of 13 years or above 75 years, pregnant women and medically unfit people are barred for taking pilgrimage in south kashmir.

  • The Board has also issued advisory relating to health and do's and don'ts for the Yatris.

World's largest solar park Shakti Sthala inaugurated in Karnataka

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated a solar power park with a 2,000 megawatt capacity at Pavagada in Karnataka's Tumakuru district.

  • Karnataka has emerged as the third-largest producer of renewable energy in the country.

  • Set a goal to source at least 20 per cent of power requirements from renewable projects. In future, Karnataka aims to be an energy-surplus state.

  • Built on 13,000 acres spread across five villages, the park entailed an expenditure of Rs 165 billion.

  • The solar park generated 600 MW power as of January 2018 while an additional 1,400 MW is expected to be generated by December.

International Yoga Festival held in Rishikesh

  • Yogacharyas and participants of the 29th annual International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh took part in a special meditation at Maharishi Mahesh Yogiji's Ashram, near Parmarth Niketan.

  • The renowned band, 'The Beatles' stayed at Maharishiji's ashram in Rishikesh in 1968, where they wrote nearly fifty songs that soon became some of their biggest hits and 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of their stay.

  • To mark the anniversary, many celebrations have been planned with the devotees of Maharishiji to remember and celebrate His life and teachings.

  • The event was led by Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji with participants from 94 countries by foot on a walking pilgrimage to Maharishiji ashram where there were sacred chanting and divine meditation.

  • Honourable Minister of AYUSH and Minister of Forests, Harak Singh Rawat was also present at the event.

India's first helicopter taxi service launches in Bengaluru

  • India's first and much awaited heli taxi service took off in Bengaluru with people overjoyed with the utility.

  • Ferrying passengers from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to Electronics City in 15 minutes.

  • The helitaxi made two trips, with the first one taking off at 6.30 a.m.

  • The helitaxi, touted to be the first such service in the country, was announced in August 2017 by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha.

  • The service is being offered by KIA in partnership with Thumby Aviation Pvt Ltd, in an effort to reduce the time taken to travel to the city from the international airport.

First cyber police station of Haryana established in Gurugram

  • The first cyber police station of Haryana has been established in Gurugram where cyber offences related cases will be registered.

  • Finolex flowguard plus specially designed as per international standards for plumbing & sanitation purposes.

  • The cyber police station was inaugurated today by chief executive officer, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, Gurugram, V Umashankar along with Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, Sandeep Khirwar in the office of ACP, DLF office, Gurugram.

  • The building of the police station has been provided by DLF in Phase 5.

  • Adequate trained manpower has already been deployed at the cyber police station.

  • If needed, cyber crime experts from outside will also be roped in this police station.

Banaswadi is first all-woman railway station in South Western Railway zone

  • Banaswadi railway station, which until was just like thousands of other stations in the country, transformed into a facility run by an all-woman crew on International Women’s Day.

  • It’s the first station in the South Western Railway (SWR) zone and the fifth in the country to achieve this distinction.

  • The other all-woman stations in the country are Matunga (Mumbai), Gandhi Nagar (Jaipur), Chandragiri (Tirupathi) and Ajni (Nagpur).

  • Henceforth, the Banaswadi station will be operated by its female staff, including the station master, booking clerks and reservation clerks.

  • All 15 officials, including security personnel, posted at the station are now women.

 Banlotwa first alcohol-free village in Ranchi district

  • Banlotwa has become the first ‘alcohol-free’ village in Ranchi district and Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghuvar Das has lauded the residents for achieving this feat.

  • The chief minister also gave Rs 1 lakh cash to the village head of Banlotwa, following his announcement two years ago that any village becoming alcohol-free would be given the money for its development.

  • The people of Banlotwa have joined hands to make the village ‘nasa mukt’ (alcohol free).

  • Even the state government is working with such an aim and willpower.

Country’s largest flag to be hoisted in Belagavi

  • The people of Belagavi will witness the largest national flag in the country being hoisted in the city.

  • Belagavi District Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi will hoist the national flag - which is 110m (365 feet) high from the base plate to the top.

  • The size of the flag is 120X80 ft, adding that the flag will weigh 500kg. The thickness of the rope is 8mm.

  • The flag will be hoisted through an electro mechanic operating system.

 Indo-French centre for engineers inaugurated in Bengaluru

  • Coinciding with the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India, an Indon French Centre of Excellence (CoE) was inaugurated to impart vocational training to engineers in electricity, automation and energy management.

  • The centre has been set up jointly by the French government, French automation company Schneider Electric and the city-based New Horizon College of Engineering.

Nasscom ropes in Facebook to roll out Design4India studio in Bengaluru.
  • Nasscom has partnered with Facebook to launch Design4India studio, in an effort to bridge the gap between software engineers and design.

  • The Design4India studio has been set up at co-working space provider we work and will be a design studio for web, mobile, augmented reality and virtual reality platforms for start-ups and designers.

  • The Design4India Initiative is just over a year old with an objective to integrate design with tech, to create design success for the software product and start-up ecosystem in India.

  • Further, the Design4India Studio will aim to bridge the gap between design and technology by offering dedicated spaces for start-ups and designers to explore, innovate and build together.

  • Further, the studio will provide start-ups access to UX design process, resources, user testing and AR/VR toolkits to enhance their products; identify problems to inform product design or redesign; gain a competitive advantage through live testing; focus on data and design changes that will have the most impact in their business and help in rapid prototyping of new products or features.

Bengaluru to get 10,000 CCTV cameras to ensure women's safety

  • As many as 10,000 Artificial Intelligence-powered CCTV cameras will be installed at over 4,500 junctions and main roads across Bengaluru to ensure safety of women.

  • Termed 'Smart Eyes', the security camera system will monitor areas on real-time basis.

  • The Centre recently approved Rs. 667 crore for Bengaluru under the Nirbhaya Fund to ensure safety of women in public places.

Navi Mumbai junctions get buttons to change traffic signal

  • In a first, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has installed pedestrian push buttons at certain junctions, allowing pedestrians to change the traffic signal.

  • Traffic signals on all four sides of the junction will carry the push buttons.

  • Once then pedestrians push the buttons, the signal will turn red for vehicles and will change to the green pedestrian sign.

NSD to host 8th Theatre Olympics in Mumbai

  • The National School of Drama (NSD) will host the eight Theatre Olympics'.

  • The Mumbai chapter of the 8th Theatre Olympics is organised by the NSD in collaboration with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Maharashtra.

  • Theatre and film veterans like Shabana Azmi, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Himani Shivpuri, Seema Biswas and Saurabh Shukla will also take part during this grand theatrical treat.

  • The megapolis will play host to 28 performances from March 24 by presenting a diverse range of theatre forms from all over the world.

  • The last leg of the festival will take place in with a concluding show on April 8.

 First India-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction inaugurated in New Delhi

  • Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar inaugurated the First India-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Delhi.

  • This workshop has been jointly organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Government of Japan.

  • It is the first formal initiative under the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Disaster Risk Reduction signed between India and Japan in September 2017.

  • Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Rajiv Kumar outlined a six-pronged approach to enhance resilience, which includes Risk Identification, Preparedness, Risk Reduction, Financial Protection, Resilient Reconstruction and Societal Awareness.

  • Fifty delegates from Japan and 70 Indian delegates including experts from government, technical institutions and private sector are participating in this two-day workshop.

Government approves Plastic Park to be set up in Deoghar District, Jharkhand 

  • The Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Ananthkumar announced that the Government of India approved the setting up of a Plastic Park in Deoghar District, Jharkhand.

  • The project would be set up at a cost of Rs.120 crores in an area of 150 acres and a range of polymer products including woven sacks, moulded furniture, water tanks, bottles, pipes mosquito nets, etc would be manufactured.

  • It has great potential for attracting investment for setting up an ecosystem for plastic industry and generate employment opportunities for the local populace, the Minister informed.

  • Addressing the media, Shri Ananthkumar informed that the project is likely to provide direct employment generation to about 6000 people and indirect employment to over 30000 people.

  • The Minister also requested the State government of Jharkhand to facilitate land/ building infrastructure to set up a Central Institute for Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET) alongside the Plastic Park so that invaluable human resource may be trained there to become plastic engineers and technicians.

  • This human resource is of vital importance as the plastic industry is growing at a rapid pace and the polymer consumption in India would double from the current 10 million metric tonnes to 20 million metric tonnes by 2022, the Minister added.

  • The coming up of the Plastic Park, CIPET and the Plastic Recycling unit would build an ecosystem that would encourage setting up of Plastic Industry at Deoghar, thereby making it a ‘Plastic Hub’ in the future.

BSNL Launches Free Wi-Fi Facility at Udwada Village in Gujrat.

  • State owned telecom player Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched Free Wi-Fi Facility at Udwada Village, Valsad District, Gujrat under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana adopted by Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, Hon’ble Minister for (I&B) and Textiles.

  • The facility was launched by Sh. Manoj Sinha, Hon’ble Minister of State for Communications and Minister of State for Railways in the presence of Smt Irani on the occasion of Navroz.

  • Under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana Rs. 16.48 Lakh is allotted for carrying out Wi-Fi by BSNL in Udwada Village.

  • With the launch of Wi-Fi service in Udwada Village, population of 6000 citizens in village as well as surrounding area will be benefited.

  • Citizens of Udwada and surrounding area will be able to use Unlimited Internet Data and Udwada Village has become Digital Village.

  • Udwada village has been adopted by me under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

  • This is vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister for strengthening the villages and make effort for extending benefit of digital India to the last miles.

World’s longest sandstone cave discovered in Meghalaya

  • Krem Puri was discovered in 2016.

  • However its actual length was found between 5 February and 1 March 2018.

  • It was measured by the Meghalaya Adventurers’ Association (MAA).

  • It is 24,583 metres long.

  • This cave is over 6,000 metres longer than the world record-holder Cueva Del Saman, a sandstone cave in Edo Zulia, Venezuela.

  • It has also become India’s second longest cave in the general category.

  • The longest India cave is the Krem Liat Prah-Umim-Labit system in the Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.

Chandigarh becomes North India's 1st city to install digital automatic speed gun cameras

  • Chandigarh, the City Beautiful, becomes North India’s 1st city to instal digital automatic speed gun cameras for traffic management.

  • Chandigarh police have installed high- tech speed cameras equipped with night vision technology to check vehicles driving above the permissible speed limit.

  • These cameras will help traffic police to record the speed of the oncoming traffic andn issue chalan to anyone driving above the city speed limit.

  • The digital cameras also have digital display installed with it to notify the speed and to caution the motorists of their speed.

  • If the speed is above the permissible limit a chalan will be sent to the vehicle owner's residential address along with the image of over speeding.

World’s oldest city Varanasi goes ‘wireless’

  • Eighty-six years after the city got electricity, overhead power cables in Varanasi are being dismantled after a project to lay underground lines over 16 sq-km has been finally completed.

  • Laying cables for 50,000 consumers through the serpentine lanes and congested markets in one of the world’s oldest cities was quite a challenge for Powergrid, the company conducting the integrated power development scheme (IPDS) project.

  • Demographics-wise Seoul and some Turkish cities on the riverfront were considered complicated.

  • While implementing IPDS in Varanasi, realised this is the most complicated city to lay infrastructure for underground cables.

  • Former Union minister of state for power and coal Piyush Goyal announced the Rs 432-crore project for underground cabling work under IPDS for Varanasi in June 2015.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Rs 45,000 crore IPDS for the country in Varanasi in September 2015.

  • The pilot project was rolled out in Kabir Nagar and Ansarabad.

Surat becomes first district to have 100% solar powered health centres

  • Surat has become the first district in the country to have 100 percent solar powered Primary Health Centers (PHC).

  • There are a total of 52 PHCs in the district and all of them are now powered by solar system.

  • Asia's largest Tulip garden in srinagar opens for visitors Srinagar's Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was opened for visitors.

  • Deemed as Asia's largest tulip garden, it is situated on the foothills of the Zabarwan mountain range by the banks of the Dal Lake.

  • 1.25 million Tulip bulbs were sown in the garden this year.

India's first insect museum opened in Tamilnadu

  •  A Rs. 5 crore insect museum with the state-of-the-art amenities was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswamy at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

  • The museum, established at a 6,691 sqft area, is fully dedicated to insects and claimed to be the first of its in the country.

  • It would display insects preserved as specimens as also live ones depicting their different developmental stages, images, videos and models of their unique behaviour, habits and habitats.

  • The uniqueness of the museum is visible in the lobby, which depicts the theme, "BUGS ARE KINGS," while the exhibiting area comprises seven radial walls (bay) on the right side and an undivided wall on the left side.
