Sikkim’s Pakyong airport to become 100th functional airport in India

  • The Pakyong airport in Sikkim is set to become the 100th operational airport in the country when it is commissioned in June.
  • Low-cost airline SpiceJet has been granted permission to fly to Pakyong from Kolkata under the civil aviation ministry’s regional connectivity scheme.
  • Sikkim was the only state without an airport in the country.
  • ''The state would enter the aviation map soon when Pakyong airport becomes operational''.
  • Twenty-five airports have been added to the aviation network under the regional connectivity scheme.
  • The airports from where flights would start in May/June under the scheme are Jamshedpur, Cooch Behar, Durgapur, Kullu and Pantnagar, according to Airport Authority of India chairperson Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Maharashtra government nod to rename North Maharashtra University after poetess Bahinabai Chaudhari

  • The Maharashtra government decided to recommend the promulgation of an ordinance to rename the Jalgaon-based North Maharashtra University after poetess Bahinabai Chaudhari.

  • The decision was taken by the state cabinet at its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

  • The cabinet has decided to make a recommendation to the governor to promulgate an ordinance to rename the North Maharashtra University as 'Kaviyatri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University', an official in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

Delhi to host six-day Festival of Bharat

  • National capital Delhi will host a six-day-long Festival of Bharat as a 21st century tribute to the majesty and depth of India's civilization.

  • The event will be held at the Scheduled between 9th May and 14th May at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

  • It will include live evening music fest, a day time lit fest with talks and debates, nutritious Ayurvedic cuisines at the organic food festival, serene morning yoga sessions, meditation and a flea market and exhibition.

  • Scholars, Grammy award winning artistes, rising new stars and prominent public figures will also be in attendance.

China to organize film festival in Kolkata in July

  • China will organize a film festival at Kolkata’s Nandan in July this year, Consul General of the People Republic of China in Kolkata.

  • The week-long film festival will be organized at Nandan, the film and cultural centre in Kolkata, in which seven Chinese films will be screened.

  • A series of cultural exchanges were on the cards this year between west Bengal and china one of them being folk art exchange, under which artists from west Bengal would visit china in the middle of june next.

First all-woman Post Office Passport Seva Kendra starts operations in Phagwara, Punjab

  • The Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) run by an all-woman team began its operations Phagwara, Punjab.

  • It was was inaugurated by Union Minister Vijay Sampla in the local head Post Office of Phagwara.

  • This kendra was 192nd POPSK in the country and first one to be operated by an allwoman team.

  • It was launched as part of Central Government’s initiative for women empowerment.

International Rail Coach Expo to be hosted by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai

  • For the first time an International Rail Coach Expo (IRCE) to focus on Rail Coaches and train sets, is being held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • Many reputed rail car and equipment builders will be showcasing their technology and products.

  • It will be a unique platform to bring different suppliers under one roof and create synergy for “Make in India”.

India's first national sports university in imphal

  • The Union Cabinet approved an ordinance to set up the country's first national sports university in imphal at Manipur.

  • Briefing reporters on the decisions of the Cabinet, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that the bill to set up the university in Imphal is already pending in Parliament.

  • Things will start moving fast once the President signs the ordinance.

  • The Manipur government has already allocated land for the proposed university.

  • The ordinance will be on the lines of the bill introduced in Lok Sabha in August, 2017.

  • As of now, there are some institutes which offer various courses for athletes and coaches.

NIC (National Informatics Centre) sets up cloud-enabled National Data Centre in Bhubaneswar

  • IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is all set to inaugurate, a cloud-enabled National Data Centre at Bhubaneswar, which will offer round-the-clock operations with secure hosting for e-governance applications of ministries and departments.

  • The NIC has national data centres at Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune, and the upcoming one at Bhubaneswar is expected to enhance the range of data centre related services offered by the government body.

  • A centralised cloud environment has been established to host multiple applications with simplified operations and increased application responsiveness to support the new generation of distributed applications.
