Q)

A tap can fill a cistern in 40 min and a second tap can empty the filled cistern in 6o min. By mistake without closing the second tap, the first tap was opened. In how many minutes will the empty cistern be filled?

[SSC CHSL 2010]

  • Explanation

According to the above given formula, if pipe A can comletely fill a tank in x hours and pipe B can comletely fill a tank in y hours, then the time taken by both pipes together to fill the tank is xyx-y hours.

    So, 40×6060-40=24020=120 minutes

Therefore, the tank will be filled by both the pipe when opened simultaneously in 120 minutes.

    Hence option D is correct.
