A pipe can fill a tank in x hours and another pipe can empty it in y hours. Here x>y. If both the pipes are kept open simultaneously in how many hours will the tank be filled?

    According to the question,

    part of the tank filled by pipe x in1 hour=1x

    part of the tank emptied by pipe y in1 hour=1y

    part of the tank filled in1 hour when both pipes x and y are opened==1x-1y=x-yxy

    Hence tank will be filled in xyx-y hours
