The Preamble of the Indian Constitution was for the first time amended by the 42nd amendment. As originally enacted The Preamble of our Constitution reads India as a "sovereign democratic republic". In 1976 the 42nd Amendment changed this to read "sovereign socialist secular democratic republic".
