The sum of five numbers is 290. The average of the first two numbers is 48.5 and the average of last two numbers is 53.5. What is the third number?

    Let the five numbers be a, b, c, d and e.

    And a+b+c+d+e+=290

    Again, a+b=2×48.5=97

    and d+e=2×53.5=107

    So, a+b+c+d+e= 97+107=204

    ∴Third number =290-204=86

    Hence, option D is correct.
